about astanga yoga
Astanga yoga is a practice that involves learning the 8 limbs of yoga. Yama, niyama, asana (posture), pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana and samadhi. It is important to practice each limb of yoga as they are interconnected.
Practise is passed onto the student from teacher and starts with asana or posture to help externally and internally cleanse the mind and body through vinyasa (movement and breathe system). Commitment to the practise is especially therapeutic.
Asana is beneficial when practised under the guidance of a qualified teacher. The teacher and student work slowly together developing the practise.
The student is taught at their own pace and in accordance to the lineage of the late Sri K Pattabhi Jois. This practise has been passed on through this lineage and has been taught this way for over 100 years. Passed onto Guruji (Sri K Pattabhi Jois) from his teacher, Krishnamacharya and from Guruji to his grandson, Sharath Jois at his yoga centre in Mysore, India.
New to Astanga Yoga? The Mysore style method is very effective way for beginners to learn Ashtanga yoga. In a Mysore class the teacher works with each student individually, allowing the student to move at their own pace. Small segments of the practice are taught to aid memorisation and familiarity. Initially, beginning students can expect their practice to be 20 - 30min long, this slowly builds over time. Consistency is important.
